For aquatic centres, leisure centres and pool operators

Pool chemicals SDS, current and one scan from the plant room door.

An aquatic centre may hold only a handful of pool chemicals, but they are some of the most reactive in any public building. When a dosing line fails or a drum is spilt, the duty manager and the fire crew need the right SDS straight away. SupplySafe keeps your hazardous chemicals register and every current SDS behind one QR poster, readable on any phone with no login.

The chemicals in a plant room

Safe Work Australia groups the riskiest pool chemicals into two families:

  • Oxidisers, such as dry pool chlorines (calcium hypochlorite, trichlorocyanuric acid) and hydrogen peroxide sanitisers. They intensify fires and can release toxic gases if they meet other chemicals, including water.
  • Corrosives, such as liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite, a base) and pool acid (hydrochloric acid). They burn skin and eyes, and their fumes can burn the airways.

Many products are both, and incompatible chemicals can look very similar once they're in drums. That's why Safe Work Australia says to check the SDS, not just the symbols on the label.

Why it matters

Pool chlorine and pool acid release poisonous chlorine gas when they meet. WorkSafe Victoria has reported an aquatic centre where an electrical fault stopped the filter pump while the automatic dosing system kept adding both chemicals into the same pipeline. The gas released into the pool area injured staff and swimmers.

For up to 250 litres or kilograms, Safe Work Australia's sheet says to keep incompatible pool chemicals at least 3 metres apart or behind a solid, chemical-proof barrier, each with its own spill containment that does not drain to a common point. Larger quantities need more distance.

A register laid out like your plant room

  • An area for each bund and store

Name areas the way the room is set out: chlorine bund, acid bund, dry chemical store, amenities cleaner's cupboard.

  • The right SDS in seconds

Search the register by product or area from the poster. Sections 4 to 7 (first aid, firefighting, spills, storage) are a tap away.

  • For the fire crew at the door

The QR poster opens every current SDS on site with no login and no app, on any phone, for anyone you let in.

  • For every shift

Duty managers, lifeguards and casual staff read it from the poster. Only the people who change the register need an account.

  • Kept current for you

When a manufacturer revises an SDS, your register switches to the new one automatically and marks it as updated, so you can brief the team.

  • A backup folder for the plant room

The register and every current SDS as one printable PDF. "Reprint needed" tells you when a sheet changes.

What the law asks, and what we do

The model WHS Regulations ask you to keep a register of the hazardous chemicals at your workplace with the current SDS for each, readily accessible to workers and emergency services. Larger quantities of pool chemicals can also bring dangerous goods duties, such as a manifest and placards, under your state's rules.

SupplySafe gives you the register, the access and the currency. It does not decide which products are hazardous, check what can be stored together, or replace a manifest, a risk assessment or professional safety advice. Check with your state or territory regulator for local requirements.

Questions pool operators ask

Is SupplySafe our dangerous goods manifest?
No. If you store enough pool chemicals to need a manifest or placards, that's a separate duty. SupplySafe keeps the hazardous chemicals register and the current SDS for each product, which is what the manifest work starts from.
Will it tell us what can be stored together?
No. SupplySafe doesn't assess compatibility or segregation. It puts the manufacturer's current SDS for every product in one place, so whoever sets up or checks the store has Sections 7 and 10 (storage and incompatible materials) in front of them.
We run several centres. Is it one register or many?
One per centre, each with its own poster, and an all-sites view for the people who look after all of them. Each centre is A$39 a month. See SupplySafe for multi-site businesses.
Do we still need a printed copy in the plant room?
Safe Work Australia's guidance allows the register and SDS to be electronic, as long as workers and emergency services can get to them readily, and suggests a backup such as hard copies in case power, internet or phones fail. We recommend a printed backup folder in or near the plant room. SupplySafe makes it in one click and shows "Reprint needed" when a sheet changes. The final call is yours.
Our chemical supplier's SDS isn't on SupplySafe.
Send us the PDF (hello@supplysafe.com.au). We load it, check it against the document and keep it current.
What does SupplySafe cost?
A$39 per site per month, or A$390 per site per year (two months free). No per-user fee: everyone on site can read the register. A 30-day free trial with no card needed, and you can cancel any time. Founding price: A$29 a month per site for your first 12 paid months. First 100 workplaces, start your plan by 31 March 2027. Paying yearly, it is A$290 a year per site for your first year. Manufacturers, importers and suppliers use SupplySafe free. See pricing.
We already keep a register. How do we move across?
Search the catalogue and tick what you hold; you can add every result of a search at once. There's no self-serve spreadsheet import yet, so send your current register to hello@supplysafe.com.au and we'll help load it. A product isn't listed? Send us the PDF from your folder (hello@supplysafe.com.au) and we load it and keep it current.
Who keeps the SDS up to date?
The company that issues it. Manufacturers and importers publish their current SDS on SupplySafe, free, and each one is checked against the PDF before it goes live. When they publish a revision, every register that holds the product switches to it automatically and marks the line as updated, so you can tell your team what changed. An SDS we load for you from your folder, we keep current too. SupplySafe never writes or edits an SDS.

Put every pool chemical SDS at the plant room door.
