Free SDS review date checker
Is your SDS past its 5-year review?
Manufacturers and importers must review each safety data sheet at least once every 5 years. Enter the revision date from your SDS and see whether it's past that review, and when the next one is due. Free, and nothing you enter is stored.

What the law says
Regulation 330(3) of the model WHS Regulations says the manufacturer or importer of a hazardous chemical must review the safety data sheet at least once every 5 years, and amend it whenever necessary to make sure it contains correct, current information. In Safe Work Australia's words: manufacturers and importers must "review each SDS at least once every 5 years" and "keep SDS updated with correct and current information".
The Code of Practice on preparing SDS counts the 5 years from the date of original preparation or the last revision. Every SDS must show the date it was last reviewed, usually in section 16.
For the business using the chemical, reg 344 is the duty that matters: get the current SDS from the manufacturer, importer or supplier, and keep it readily accessible to workers and emergency services. Victoria hasn't adopted the model laws, but WorkSafe Victoria likewise says manufacturers and importers must review and revise each SDS "at least every 5 years".

SupplySafe tracks this automatically
Checking one date is easy. Checking every SDS on the shelf, every year, is the job nobody gets to. In a SupplySafe register every product shows its review-due date, worked out from the revision date on the sheet. Manufacturers and importers publish their current SDS on SupplySafe, free, and when they publish a revision your register switches to it automatically and the review-due date restarts.
Questions about SDS review dates
- Does an SDS expire after 5 years?
- Not as such. The model WHS Regulations (reg 330) require the manufacturer or importer to review the SDS at least once every 5 years and amend it whenever needed to keep it correct and current. An SDS older than 5 years is a sign to ask for the current one, not proof that it's wrong. See how long an SDS is valid.
- Which date on the SDS should I enter?
- The date it was last revised, usually in section 16. Safe Work Australia's Code of Practice puts the review at least once every 5 years from the date of original preparation or the last revision, so use the issue date only if there's no revision date. More in which SDS date matters.
- Whose job is the review?
- The manufacturer's or importer's. As the business using the chemical, your duty under reg 344 is to get the current SDS and make it readily accessible. If yours is past its review date, ask your supplier or the manufacturer for their current version.
- Do you keep the date I enter?
- No. The check runs in your browser. The date isn't sent to us or stored anywhere.
- What does SupplySafe cost?
- A$39 per site per month, or A$390 per site per year (two months free). No per-user fee: everyone on site can read the register. A 30-day free trial with no card needed, and you can cancel any time. Founding price: A$29 a month per site for your first 12 paid months. First 100 workplaces, start your plan by 31 March 2027. Paying yearly, it is A$290 a year per site for your first year. Manufacturers, importers and suppliers use SupplySafe free. See pricing.
- Do we still need printed SDS?
- Safe Work Australia's guidance says the register and SDS can be kept electronically, as long as workers and emergency services can get to them readily. It also suggests a backup, such as hard copies, in case power, internet or phones fail. So we recommend a printed backup folder alongside your SupplySafe register. SupplySafe makes it in one click and shows "Reprint needed" when an SDS changes. The final call is the business's.
- We already keep a register. How do we move across?
- Search the catalogue and tick what you hold; you can add every result of a search at once. There's no self-serve spreadsheet import yet, so send your current register to hello@supplysafe.com.au and we'll help load it. A product isn't listed? Send us the PDF from your folder (hello@supplysafe.com.au) and we load it and keep it current.
- Who keeps the SDS up to date?
- The company that issues it. Manufacturers and importers publish their current SDS on SupplySafe, free, and each one is checked against the PDF before it goes live. When they publish a revision, every register that holds the product switches to it automatically and marks the line as updated, so you can tell your team what changed. An SDS we load for you from your folder, we keep current too. SupplySafe never writes or edits an SDS.
